I am sure that there are several instances where you have been given unwanted advice by several people. Some advices that helped you and some that made your day worse were given to you anyway, but you might not have seen a pattern underlying that effect, and here i wish to convey to you how proximigy affects advice.

However I am now going to show you what I mean by the advice proximity effect.


Suppose you are sitting with a group of people with chairs kept row wise and the guy sitting next to you is going to advice you (~_^).This is a very good distance to maintain when someone advices you.


First of all, you will be very close to the person who is advising you, so he thinks that, most of whatever he is telling you is getting in pretty well and does not tend to repeat any of his point.

However, suppose you have a chair’s gap between the two of you. At this point the distance has increased. So you are really in a situation where the one advising you thinks that he needs to stress on a particular point, because he thinks that you are not receiving the advice properly. And hence tends to repeat a certain point over and over making you not able to concentrate on what he is telling you, thus reducing your concentration.

This effect tends to increase over distance. And has different effect on people of different gender, age, posture & height.

Gender: For people of the same gender this law always holds. However for people of different gender, the proximity is dependent on how well the two of them know each other, the reason the person is giving the advice. The situation in which the person is giving the advice, the time of the day, humidity, introvert/extrovert, number of people in the room, direction of wind (^_^), presence/absence of decorative objects on the face, contraction/dilation of the pupil of the eye, eye contact, lip movement and factors such as previous encounters between the two people.

The above list is exclusive however it is not exhaustive; there can be several other factors such as presence of parents/friends/relatives/teachers/neighbours/kids in the vicinity. The reason the two are sitting next to each other. The colour of the room etc...

Age: Age difference between the two people plays a colossal role in deciding the outcome of the effect. If it is an elder person giving an advice to a younger person, then the younger person will probably delve more into taking this effect because of the respect he has for the elder person, and assuming that the elder person has a lot more experience/expertise in that field.

However when a younger person tries to advice an elder person the advice is not taken in most cases because he is treated as an amateur. Older people tend to have a lot more ego as they feel insecure when people don’t respect them just because they expect them to. Older people tend to treat younger people like they don’t have any experience at all.

Age related Advice proximity effects can be controversial because it depends on the society, the culture and attitude of the people in the locality. So this might not be an ideal guide. However you have to keep the effect in mind.

Posture: When people feel the need to advice you, they don’t usually care about your posture; however if you need to advise someone make sure that your neck/head/face or whatever is above theirs. If the person you want to advice is sitting, then make sure you stand to gain the effectiveness of the advice.

Politicians take good advantage of this parameter. A politician’s stage is usually kept well above the neck of the people to ensure that they oblige to whatever he says.

Teachers take advantage of this situation and tend to scold you if you sitting when she is giving you the advice, because in this scenario, she has the advantage of age as well as posture. So please do stand when the teacher addresses you, because a standing person gains the advantage of posture and height which I am going to discuss next.

In some scenarios additional parameters also effect like those discussed in gender.

Height: Believe it or not, height matters when giving or taking an advice. Among the people of same age group, the advice of the taller one is considered a good approach because he tends to appear to be older. Even if not because of the appearance, a taller person is over-estimated in most of the cases.

Tall people are considered wise, mature, intelligent and reliable for reasons I am yet to find out. Though this effect plays a very strong first impression, it will die out unless the taller person realizes that he has to give effective advices inorder to keep it this way.

Height can play a good role in overcoming the age affect of the AP effect (-_-).

Conclusion:

·         Distance between two people is affected by the distance between them.

·         Factors like gender age and height decide the acceptance of an advice.

Insight:

Despite the above discussion, an advice is truly valued on the past effectiveness of an advice. Only advice another person if he begs for it or his life depends on it. Or else your advice will not be valued. People tend to neglect anything that they get for free.

Yes its a totally different story if you are a well established person, who has achieved something worthwhile in life and is advising others.

If you go on advising every single guy, every now and then. You will tend to get neglected for whatever you say in the future. People will try to repel you and you will lose your confidence in facing people.

Ever since I realized the presence of this effect I have always tried to maintain a good proximity with the person giving me the advice and it has worked really well. But I would like your help in establishing the true extent/relevance of this effect.

Rain is one of the most amazing things that i have come across. Don’t you just love that smell in the air when it rains.

Rain is nature’s way of gardening:

When it rains there is bulk water transfer from one region to another. Generally it doesn’t pour hard enough to uproot plants and trees, neither soft enough to hide its presence.

Rain is a continuous space-time process:

Evaporation and Condensation of water is something that keeps on happening in all the places at all the time.

Rain the un-predictable presence:

It’s not possible to exactly predict when its going to rain. But there is always an indication that it’s going to rain beforehand.

Rain the coolant:

After a rain we can notice that the surroundings are suddenly a whole lot cooler. The atmosphere gets a whole lot humid.

Rain and water table:

Rain increases the water table in the earth, the water bodies are re vitalized and this ensures the continued survival of all creatures.

Rain the punctual:

We have a 3 month rainy season where rain is promised every now and then. This helps us to identify a suitable time to sow the seeds and reap the harvest.

Rain the resource:

Though there is plenty of rain water going down the drain, there are new ideas coming up to utilize the resource in the form of rain water harvesting.

Rain the saviour:

It is considered a grace from God generally when it rains in a drought ridden area. A single rain can sometimes bring back a full lush of lost greenery.

Me and Basketball.

I started playing basket ball in the second year of my engineering life. The game also goes by the name of "B-Ball" and "hoops"

I had once attempted to play basketball in my 11^th standard and still remember people laughing at me for carrying the ball all the way across the court. I had decided not to play any more basketball after that and none of my friends really encouraged/guided me during that time.

However in the second year of my engineering life, I found that we had lots of free time during the semester. I used to play a lot of football and cricket during my school days, in fact I used to play whatever I came across. I was first in all my school running races. I had won many prizes in short-put, long jump, high jump, relay, throw ball... back then (school days) and since we did not have a basketball over there (school ground), the game did not really reach out to me.

Second year of engineering made me consider the game because, not many student played anything apart from basketball during that time. The sport was in fact so famous, that the ground used to never be free. When i asked my friend Abhilash to teach me, he agreed and thus i began with the game of basketball.

I started with close range baskets, board shots, however it took me an year to learn the lay-up (lol). This game has helped me in a lot of ways during engineering. I was not tall enough for a dunk though, but i made up by practicing when ever i found time to shoot the basket from different distances. After several games of fouls and violations, i kind of got the hang of the game. Me and most of my friends used to practice different shots like the 3 point shot, the different shots at the different markings on the D of the court called 'around the world'.


The game has several activities but some of the major ones include blocking, passing, rebounding, ball-handling ... A good player must know all these thoroughly, I managed to learn a few by the end of engineering (^_^).

Unlike cricket where you score by either hitting close by and running, or hitting outside the boundary, in basketball, the only way of scoring is by shooting the ball right into the basket.

Basketball is a very dynamic game. You don’t stand around the court at one spot and wait, rather you move with the ball and change sides in mid of the game. Where as in cricket you wait at one spot for the ball to come in your direction. And there is no resting in this game like the 9 players who rest when 2 players bat on the field.

Basketball is a team game, at every point of the game, a player needs to put his effort in playing as a team. He as to continuously monitor his team mates to quickly decide who is free, and who can manage to score a basket. He has to look out for openings to snatch the ball and be ready to overcome who ever tries to block him.

I have played basket-ball almost every day just for the sake of the enjoyment the game has given me. It did not matter how well you had done your test that day, or what flavoured ice-cream you ate that day because it was worth the wait of the game of basket-ball every-day.

I bought my first basketball in the holidays after my 6^th semester. I tried my best to learn what-ever I could from the people I met while playing basket-ball.

I made lots of friends, known to me only by their face during basketball.

The game teacher you to be disciplined in a kind of way and be alert for what-ever turn the game might take. 

Fat people Transition effect.

Being fat or think is a strictly relative comparison.

A person is considered fat when he seems to occupy more space than another person. This includes having a larger stomach, butt, chubby face, fat legs etc...

However being fat or not is not something a person realized on his own. When people who had seen you a long time back find a difference in your appearance, or size they tend to comment on it, which makes us realize that we are fat or thin. And as mentioned before, there is no strict reference. Often it so happens that we are compared to the people around us, to conclude if we are fat or thin.

Lets look at a scenario where there are 8 people sitting in a row and a person behind decides to judge if they are fat or not.

We can see here that when comparing 2 people, their fatnesses are of no significance only the difference of their fatness matters.  Our mind makes an average assumption of the actual fatness and it can be seen in the black curve that the less fat people appear to be fat when amongst fatter people.

The method of averaging can be tracked on proper analysis, but i have made no such effort. It can be one of straight-line method, simple average, weighted average... or any of such methods.

To be on the safer side, make sure that if you are a fat person, then you sit next to a fatter person because as the graph indicates, your relative fatness will make you look thin.

Suppose you are a very thin person and if you want to look a bit fat, then sit amongst people who are just slightly fatter than you.

Though the final opinion of the people will very when you change the group, it still leaves an impression which you can bank upon in future encounters.

Hyderabad trip - A nerds story

Hyderabad trip

After a very very long time, my family decided to go together on a trip. My mom gets LFC refund for distant travels from bank and we really needed a break from routine.

Reason for choosing Hyderabad:

· We had relatives in Hyderabad.

· The weather conditions were similar except that it was slightly warmer.

· We had heard from a lot of people mostly family and friends that Hyderabad was one of the must see locations.

We decided to go to Hyderabad by Rajadhani express, a very famous train known for its speed and service. While on our way to Hyderabad, we had one more person in our compartment, his name was Puneet and he was an entrepreneur of the shoe brand VIVA from Delhi. He did not speak much but I did get him to speak a little with me.

As we entered the city by train, the site of several mosques by the side of the train it was only later that we realized that 40% of the population of Hyderabad was Muslims and was on the rise.

Anyway, on all the days of the trip i hoped to get  a chance to say ‘Hi’ to a class mate in Andhra Pradesh, because most of the guys in my class spoke Telugu; however, during the trip i did not come across any of the class mates, which is most likely because they had joined either Infosys or CTS or Wipro... however enough of this madness and lets get into the details of the trip.


We had booked a holiday home from State Bank of Hyderabad. We stayed there. The chefs there were very good and the rooms were fantastic.

Places we visited on the trip:

Day 1:

· Salur Jung museum
· Charminar
· Golkonda fort
· Lumbini Park
· Birla mandir

Day 2:

· Ramoji Film city

Day 3:

· Snow city
· Birla Planetarium
· Birla Museum

We reached the Secunderabad station of Hyderabad where my uncle Ananth came to pick us up. We reached his place, got ourselves refreshed and set to have a look at the different places in Hyderabad.

Salur Jung Museum:

            A must see place if you ask me. This museum is really huge so don’t expect to get out any time before 4 hours. In fact the museum is so magnificent, you can visit it at least over 3 times to get a sense of satisfaction of exploring it. to It is a 3 floor museum. Its the third largest museums in India. Yes it is an art museum, but It’s got so much of variety you will get lost in admiring the beauty of most of the artifacts in the museum.

Some of the most remarkable things I have seen in the museum include,
1) Viel Rebeka – one of the most beautiful statues in the museum. its a marble statue and looks life like.
2) Musical Clock – A real mechanical clock marvel with the functionality still intact.

3)     Ivory carvings.

4)     Miniature paints.

5)     Carpets from Egypt and china.

6)     Chinese porcelain wares.

7)     Carvings from Buddhist and Jain era.

8)    Large display of weaponry.
9)     Miniature statues that display war preparations in different countries.
10)  Ravi varma paintings
11)  Paintings of Flora and Fauna
12) Items made from jade and semi precious stones.


Charminar:

A very majestic site. We went to the top of the charminar. It was a beautiful view. All around the charminar, you can see people selling a lot of stuff such as samosa (delicious), bangle shops, little toys and common house hold items.

The structure is approximately 6 stories high as per the number of steps there. There is a very narrow spiral stairs to the top.

The walls have been completely mutilated by random writings by people.

Golkonda Fort:

The heat had given all of us head ache by the time we reached Golkonda fort. We hesitated appointing a guide, but regretted it later. The fort itself is a marvel. It appears somewhat like our chitradurga fort. On the way to the fort, we can see several cannons.

While walking within the fort i witnessed a guy killing a chicken with his hands and my heart went all panic panic!!!

There are very few guards at the fort, and the visitors have totally dirtied the whole fort. There is a Ramdev temple to the midway to the top and one more temple at the very top of the fort.

Unlike Bangalore, people there don’t cherish tender coconut. After we got back down, all of us had icecream in the park. Then we left the fort.

I suggest that you take a guide if you ever decide to go to the fort.


One of the funniest thing we see there is the sign "Way to UP" everywhere. As if we can go to Uttar Pradesh (lolz).

Birla Mandir:

Birla mandir is a some-what different temple in the sense that it is built in a modern architecture. Its got lots of carvings from different religions. The Idle of the lord is very beautiful. It started raining heavily by the time we entered the sanctum and as if my miracle, the rain slowed down just as all of us had reached the exit of the sanctum of the lord.

Lumbini Park:

Its a children's park with boating and lots of rides. It is situated on the tank bund of the Hussain sagar lake and a very famous tourist destination. Since we reached late we missed the laser show.

Ramoji Film City:

            I believe that Ramoji Film City is Among the places a person must visit in India. Some of the wonders and displays of the film city seem too good to be true.

As soon as you enter the main gate you get to see the enormity of the place.

The staff at the ticket counter are very friendly.From there you board a bus and it takes you to the place where the majority of the events take place.

The road to the place is very beautiful. And at one point there are different lamp decorations for different streets.

Places to visit at Ramoji Film City:

· Wild Wild West Show: An act that shows how synchronized the sequences in a movie are supposed to be.

· Borasura: It is a house of horror (supposed to be :P) very well build.

· Ramoji towers: A place where you sort of experience the apocalypse.

· Fundustan: A place where there are fun rides and circus acts for children.

· Eureka entertainment: A place where we can see staged acts of different cultures, different themes and people of different ages.

· Movie magic: this place had several life size models of famous movie starts including Jachie Chan, Sylvester Stanoe, Merilyn Munroe, Charlie Chaplin, Superman, Spiderman, Batman, Heman...

· Action: A place where we get to learn several aspects of movie making and how we usually tend to take a narrow perspective of a movie.

Snow city:

            If you have never seen snow then this is the place where you get to see it... its a theme part with a huge slide, a place to dance, a merigo round in snow, snow tables, you can see ice stalactites, play air ball basket ball, throw ball with lots of fun.

The temperature inside the place is at -5 degrees and we really enjoyed it.

Since we did not have time we did not go to the go karting, living dead, ocean part, tropical fauna regions of the park.

Birla Planetarium:

If you have been to the planetarium in Bangalore then this planetarium is not worth the visit. Me and most of us there fell asleep by the mid of the show.

Birla Museum:

Yes compared to the vishveshwaraiah museum in Bangalore this museum is very ameture, but the museum is very good in the sense that you get to learn and understand science practically.

There is an art museum at the bottom floor of the museum.

A dinosaur museum with a very large dinosaur skeleton and the pillars have impressions of pre historic flora.

There is a relay museum which is intended to teach satellite communication, but most of the equipments there are not well handeled.

The museum and planetarium are surrounded by beautiful park which have several idols from different excavation sites in India.

Surge of IDEAS

Regardless of where I go or what i see, I find that there are so many things that are out of place.

I see the world in way that so one in this world would ever have, yet I keep most of it to myself and here are some of the cool ideas I have had lately.

1) Recently i had been to the tailor. Me dad and my brother go to the same tailor, when we go there, the tailor first examines the clothes, then he takes measurements, and after 2 or 3 weeks we get our clothes and end up paying the tailors fee...

Here is the catch, in our last visit, I saw the whole process like a way I had never seen before. I thought, what if i make a device that takes my clothes as input, then i feed in the measurements so that all the inputs needed by the device are filled in. That day I came home just thinking of a whole new league of designs. I was afraid to jot it down on paper, but for your satisfaction, i can say that the design was similar to that of a HP printer.

In fact I think I will see this device in my life time and might as well take my time to build it myself.

2) Visit to the barber. Yes i was again at it, sinking deep into my own world! that morning at the barbers store, for some reason, the pointless talk going on between the other customers and the barber did not seem to interest me.

I was thinking of proximity sensors that can detect when an object comes within a few millimeters, "WALLA" I thought, why not have a machine that will cut all the hair bigger than a few millimeters so that you can get your hair cut when ever you want, and can customize it as per your interest.

I mean think about it, if you can configure such a machine, i mean fine tune it even further, you can have a device that you can use to shave as well as get a hair cut. YES I am aware of the trimmers available in the market.

But by using those you can't expect a cool look. It would be a sin not to mention that i remember seeing a cartoon of the jetsons where Elroy get different hair styles using an automated hair dresser.
